1 aug: that she blows. I see whales

1Aug: Thar she blows! An ECL forming offshore from here & just north. This is not good because this means (L pressure cycling clockwise) we get a strong & wet onshore winds. But if youre tucked up inside/below decks it should pass over on 24 hrs. 
It could be that it begins later today, so after feeding the animals & getting wood in, we should get am hours walk behind us. I know the dogs would enjoy it too. They were couped up yesterday as I went to get safety pins (to hang my laundry on the Camino) & coloured laces (to distinguish my shoes against mistaken identity/ theft). I searched high & low for no benefit. Brandi the pup destroyed the lounge chair again & the other boys were peaking out.
Actually it was my first visit to the shopping mall in many months. My usual visiting style is to hit one shop, head down flatout, them escape. But unfortunately yesterday I had to shop around & look hard for the elusive needle in the haystack. I can say that I saw a heap of mall rats. These rats tended to be overweight, talkative to their shopping buddy, wearing bright polyester trackies with gaudy trim & a crazed expression. The expression is a complexity of I am so happy with all these bright lights, flashy displays & sugary food that my depression & sense of meaninglessness has momentarily faded away. I know, judgy, but if the shoe fits. What is it with the youngish men talking like emasculated goofs? The only people I saw close to reasonable were the young mothers who seemed to be out on the world for a coffee & bag of disposable nappies.
In hindsight, I realise this is not about those mall people. Perhaps the people who profit from malls & exploiting third world labours, have created am overconsuming mass of individuals with little purpose. 
   No wonder we travel halfway across the planet to meet thinking, caring, simple living walkers.

trip west pt 2

Its the day I leave my daughters place with some sadness & begin a solo drive 100+ kilometres south west. I'll skirt desert lands, seek off piste roads if possible & dawdle at cool places. I know that the main highways will not provide. Let's go! But first some exercise & oats.  1000: my daughter pops in for morning tea (her) & breakfast (me). While we sat talking my son called to report that he had scored a full time position with a local fire management mob. This is huge, his first independent job since finishing homeschooling some years earlier. This news buoys my mood for the day; having him at home will lessen my responsibilities feeding pets & remaining close to home. After I motored almost across the state, my daughter calls to report that her seniors have asked her to apply for several positions on Council that she might prefer.
