doing good

This week saw a major step forward in our progress towards a critical point in global warming. Perhaps in years to come, as a few remaining humans sit in their underground bunker of a sun ravaged planet and reflect, they might agree that glacial collapse in 2025 was "it". The straw that broke the camel's back.

Emissions Report by Australian Department of Climate Change
The report shows emissions were 446.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2-e) in the year to December 2024. This is essentially flat compared with the previous year, with national emissions estimated to have increased 0.05% (0.2 Mt CO2-e).
Across the sectors; industry and agriculture are down, electricity generation and transport sectors have increased.

These figures, added to all the hot air from politicians and our new gas mining lease extension, it does not look good for our future. Mindful that Australia exports shiploads of coal to China for their energy production. Those emissions are not credited against Australia (they should be), and our economy is propped up by these dubious means. "We're on the road to nowhere", Talking Heads.

When will we know? Everyday "record" heat, cold, wet, dry, windy, stormy ... weather strikes the planet. Each major event causes loss of life,  property and habitat but we collectively still head off the work and consume as usual.
For over 20 years I've lived on minimum wage in am offgrid cottage. In the winter our solar heated water is assisted by burning wood sustainably  after a week of East Coast Low weather, embedded on a,very soggy month when it rained almost daily. People romanticize over "simple pleasures", but ooh a hot shower using rainwater heater by woodfire, is especially good.
