A Sustainable Way Ahead ... finally
I am just musing over an ABC TV program highlighting the progress of the country of Singapore towards sustainable living. What I hear from industry leaders and visiting journalists is a description of what is being done. This contrasts with what we are labouring under with successive governments: moaning about unachievable goals set by world environmental bodies, arguing for exceptional circumstances to avoid limits, then promises that we will be "somewhere near" a specific goalamy years on the future. The collective Australian attitude to sustainable development is clinging to old ways, resisting and delaying change.
This contrasts greatly with Singaporean attitudes: "economic development should not be pursued at the expense of the environment or social inclusion". Looking after the planet, and the people! An ABC reporter, after describing the city as a giant garden, added that the environment was more beautiful, cooler and accessible to all citizens. Already, as of years prior to 2024, "Singapore is a liveable and sustainable city, with clean air and a clean living environment, a robust and diversified supply of water, and beautiful green spaces". This is not some elusive dream state that may be grasped at, some time in the distant future.
The green Singaporean economy is achieving goals by integrating systems, to "maximize our resources and reduce our carbon footprint and providing for the needs of the current generation without compromising on the interests of our children and grandchildren". This approach includes the development of a circular energy model, straight out of Pwemaculture design manual. All energy and resources are produced from within the system, ultimately no energy or resources are introduced or expelled from a closed system.
What this leaves me with is a feeling of hope, that a way ahead can work on a national scale, they there are governments acting this way and it's good for people and nature. Mind blowing and uplifting.
