tiki prep for painting - port hull

work on the deck of the port hull continues. today I got to sand any lose bits of paint and epoxy filler away to provide a secure base for painting. it appears that norglass shipshape primers undercoat is a good quality next step. After being caught out with poor quality paint previously I'll go for marine grade products on future.
the local supplier is $208 for 4 litres which is $10 cheaper than the chandlery in town.
14 June. I buy the primer but its a bit of nonevent; they charge the same over the counter & due to its volatile chemistry it cannot be opened multiple times. So it must be exchanged today for a single pot primer.

Power sanding areas that were epoxy coated. Found the all purpose primer has great thickness and capacity to fill all blemishes. I'm not worried too much about it being absolutely smooth, but Amy advance in that direction is a bonus. Used about 300ml on entire port deck and hatches. I am now aware that a 4l at three times the cost of 500ml only, is the better buy. Maybe next time.
It looks great already and I have hood feelings about the quality of the finish this time.
19JUN23: Using polyurethane white finish coat for the first time. It looks thick and lush. So clean.
I have a sand coloured polyurethane set aside for the deck of my clinker dinghy, I thought it may look (just) ok on the hatches. Well it much yellower than I imagined, and quite pastel, lovely and soft. I will need to restrain myself from wanting to paint the beams in that colour too. I am thinking "pure white" all over, with just some contrast with the hatches.
Today, I had no sand or grit to paint the main sections of the deck, so it's just the surroundings, and the little deck house. It looks clean and healthy because there are no cracks or crannies where moisture can pass through to the wooden core. Its quite energising.

gathered sand from near to merewether beach. Applied this to a wet coat of deck paint. And its looking fresh and getting ready for action.
24JUN23.
First finish coat applied to outer port hull, and 3rd poly coat on the decks. Looking great!
Sunday 25jun23: got a few hours work in this afternoon. Second coated the outer port hull with focus on covering up under the gun'l rail. Well apart from getting fluff out of the cheapo rollers, the finish should be pretty shiny.
Watching 'Living on the Ocean" on youtoob rhe captain of "Dawn" revealed that he used epoxy resin instead on antifouling paint. The epoxy needs a regular scrub, but it doesn't poison the sea and seals the hull below waterline from moisture. He recommended self levelling two pack resin, but I just used normal epoxy. Woohoo.

The work continues. Lots of filling and sanding inside of port hull.just now i have primed the inside of the cabin and hull ready for painting. But a little drizzle is here, so have to wait.
